The terms ‘aryl’ and ‘aromatic’ are often used interchangeably to describe compounds containing benzene rings. This advanced organic chemistry course examines the aryl group, arenes and benzene rings. We study the structure of benzene and phenols and IUPAC’s system of naming aryl compounds. We also describe the substitution reactions of hydrogens and hydroxyl groups in the benzene ring and the preparation of benzyl compounds.
